Unlucky Sheffield Get Bury-ed

Updated: March 31, 2017

The Northern League season opened for the Stars with defeats in all three matches away at Bury Comets. The League One match got off to the worst possible start when Niall Morton was involved in a crash that ended his participation in the rest of the fixture. Down a heat leader the Stars struggled to stem the flow of 7-3 wins that Bury were stacking up, the home team going on to win by 108-72. Luke Morton took a race win in heat 8 and the only other times that Sheffield stopped the Comets charge was when the impressive Adam Watson/Ed Morton where on the track. Both are in the GB under 18 squad to go to Australia in November. If they can continue to forge a good partnership, it augurs well for their participation in the team. Adam dropped just two points in the match and the pair scored both of the Stars maximum 7 points in heats 3 and 12.

SHEFFIELD Scorers –  Adam Watson 19+3, Ed Morton 15+1, Luke Morton 12, Laura Watson 11, Sam Haines 8, Kielan Burton 3, Niamh Morton 2, Jack Brownell 1, Niall Morton 1.

The new match format for League Two allows for up to four reserve riders. So new the new team manager duo of Ed Morton and Adam Watson utilised this to the full by naming all Sheffield’s registered riders in the match day squad. The Comets are defending champions and showed they mean to hold onto the title with an 82-64 victory. The Stars gave a debut to new signing Sammi Marsh, the Bedworth based teenager finishing her day with a well-taken win in heat 14. The Stars also saw Sam Haines, Niamh Morton and Luke Morton record race wins. Laura Watson, Kielan Burton and Logan Perkins all played their part in restricting Bury to just an eight point lead, by 52-44 with five races to go. The wheels then fell off the Stars challenge with Bury taking the next three races with 7-3 maximums to claim the league points. The busiest person on the day was the approved first aider. They were required to administer assistance to the cuts and bruises picked up by Laura, Sam, Kielan and Jack.

SHEFFIELD Scorers – Niamh Morton 12+2, Kielan Burton 9, Sam Haines 9, Sammi Marsh 9, Laura Watson 7+1, Luke Morton 6, Logan Perkins 6+1, Jack Brownell 5, Joe Brownell 1.

The Stars lost narrowly by 54-58 in the under 13’s League Three match. No scorers are available.

Hopefully all the riders will be fit for this Sunday, 2nd April, when  the Stars have to repel the challenge of the Northumbria Vikings. Tapes up at Cookson Park will be 2pm for the League One fixture.
