It’s Coming Home, Laura & Ed Set The Ball Rolling!

Updated: July 10, 2018

Sheffield’s Ed Morton and Laura Watson enjoyed a double success, when racing at Great Blakenham in the Home International series, on the very day England beat Sweden 2-0 in the World Cup. Ed celebrated gaining his fourth Young England cap with a score of 14, as the three Lions gained a comprehensive win in the Junior International. Ed had two race wins, losing to Ben Tinsdale (Poole/Scotland) and Fraser Garnett (Poole/Wales) as England finished on 65 points. Second placed Ireland were well back on 38, with Scotland and Wales tied on 37. The Scots winning a race off to claim third place.

Laura’s success came in the regional pairs competition. Partnered with Emily Burgess (the A & T teenage sensation) the duo scored 37 points to win the trophy for the North & Scotland Region. Laura was content for Emily to take the race wins (of which she had five out of six) as she made sure of heat wins for the pairing. They got two maximum seven’s and three six pointers, the only drawn heat being the last one (when Lauren Hookway won for the South & South Wales, who would be runners-up). Laura’s score was 14 plus 3 assists, with Emily scoring 23.

Sheffield have also been busy working with Sheffield schools through Craig Malkin and the Links School Sport Partnerships. Eight schools have been involved, each sending a group of 12 pupils to the Cookson track. The culmination has been a North/East and South/West individual and a team championship. The South/West individuals at Graves track had Dobcroft School provided the boys and girls victor. At Cookson, the North/East winners came from Emmaus (boys) and Phillimore (Girls).

The team event took place last Friday at Cookson, and was the most successful one yet. Having already experienced racing on the track the pupils put on a feast of excellent racing, with plenty of desire, determination and skill in their performances. Pipworth School won the girls and combined trophies, with St Wilfrids claiming the boys trophy after a dramatic run-off with Emmaus.
