The Sheffield Stars quintet of Adam and Laura Watson plus, Ed, Luke and Niall Morton found the competition too hot to handle, as the Stars European Club Championship adventure wilted in the sweltering Bank Holiday heat at the East Park circuit in Wolverhampton.

Sheffield opened the Championship with a fourth place finish in match D after scoring 36 points. Niall top scoring and Ed claiming a notable win over three-time World Champion Dave Hemsley (Leicester) in the very last race.

Result : A & T 49, Coventry 43, Leicester 42, Sheffield 36, Birmingham ‘B’ 27. Ranked 14th

The Stars then went on into Match E. Again, it was a fourth placed finish (in a match that featured two of the eventual finalists – Wednesfield Aces and Leszno).

Result : Wednesfield 52, Ipswich 49, Leszno 47, Sheffield 27, East Park 24. Ranked 14th

The scoring system left Sheffield still ranked 14th and with one final opportunity to make it to the semi-finals. Standing in the way were the eighth and ninth ranked teams, Horspath and Stockport. Despite the Stars achieving their best score (40 points) off the weekend, it was only good enough for third place and meant the Club would not improve on the 4th place finish from 2012 and 6th place finish in 2014.

Result : Stockport 51, Horspath 45, Sheffield 40, East Park ‘B’ 31, Birmingham ‘B’ 29.

The Grand Final was won by Czestochowa of Poland, the sixth Polish team to win the Championship. Poland having dominated the Finals (Polish teams having won 11 finals since the competition began in 1999, the only GB winner being Southampton in 2001).  The winning team featured two ex-Sheffield Elite League riders in Marcin Szymanski (2008) and Piotr Jamrosczyk (2009). Also racing at the weekend was Remi Burchardt for Torun. Remi is another rider who spent a season racing for Sheffield in the Elite league (2009).

So Sheffield ended the Bank Holiday ranked 14th team in Europe, with fellow Northern League teams Astley (ranked 7th) and Stockport (ranked 8th) doing markedly better than the Stars.
